Dear Subscriber,
Hope that you have been enjoying your summer.
It has been a good summer here at Windhorse Books.
We have been expanding our list of titles with some great new books. One cannot help but reflect on how many new books on Buddhism have become available since the late 1960’s when only a handful of books were available in English. It is a real joy to be able to offer such a breadth of experiences, reflections and teachings … including parenthood and poetry, memoirs and meditations, ranging from social to scriptural commentaries.
On Tibetan Meditation
After a quiet period Dharma Publications have produced some new works. In particular some great stuff on Tibetan meditation. A beautifully produced book as well as a series of four meditation CDs have all just arrived at Windhorse Books. The book is a delight to hold in your hands and visually very beautiful. Tarthang Tulku has such a long-standing and thorough knowledge of applying Tibetan Buddhist teachings in the West. This also is evident in the presentation of the CDs with meditations led by a softly spoken but clear Tibetan voice that presents excellent instruction—suggesting rather than demanding—in these techniques.
Tibetan Meditation: practical teaching and step-by-step exercises on how to live in harmony, peace and happiness by Tarthang Tulku
The key to solving most of life's problems lies in
understanding the mind—a state of open awareness. Through meditation we can
connect with this awareness, rid ourselves of negative judgements, and free
ourselves from anger, frustration, and pain. Through practical essays,
step-by-step exercises, and many illuminating stories, this new compilation
helps us learn how to prepare mind and body for meditation, let go of fear and
anxiety, be more honest and compassionate, transcend the illusion of time, and
become more focused and at the same time more relaxed. It addresses all aspects
of meditation: what it is, the attitudes that help us benefit from it, and how
to establish and sustain a satisfying practice. This practical and
straightforward introduction to basic principles of meditation will be of
interest to practitioners at all levels. (See also Tibetan meditation CDs on

Tibetan Meditation—audio CD series by Tarthang
Tulku
“In the beginning meditation helps to become quiet, still, calm and relaxed.
Later we discover that it offers a way to deal with our thoughts and emotions.
More fundamentally, meditation is a process of understanding and pursuing what
is real, what is valuable, and what is possible.”
Tibetan Meditation: beginning meditation
Meditative awareness has three primary qualities: calmness, openness, and
harmony. As we practice, we naturally become calm, relaxed, comfortable and we

Lives of Buddhists
A couple of recently released books explore two quite different characters:
Blazing Splendor: the memoirs of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche
by Erik Pema Kunsang and Marcia Binder Schmidt
Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche (1920 - 1996) was among Tibetan Buddhism’s greatest
masters of the 20th century, and was highly instrumental in bringing the
practice of Dzogchen (Great Perfection) to the West. This book is an intimate
glimpse into the remarkable reality of a tulku (a reincarnated master) with
tales that form a sweeping account describing a world where miracles, mystery,
and deep insight are the order of the day. Blazing Splendor also covers the rich
tapestry of his family history; the contemplative lineages that he himself came
to hold; as well as stories about some of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist masters
of our time. The result being not just a personal memoir, but a spiritual
history of Tibet as it enters and moves through the upheavals of last century.

Dipa Ma: the life and legacy of a Buddhist master
by Amy Schmidt
Dipa Ma was one of the few women in her generation to devote herself entirely to
the pursuit of meditation. She was the first truly accomplished female
meditation master in the Theravada tradition to teach in the United States and,
while she had a deep devotion to the tradition, she also had a fierce belief in
the equality of the spiritual potential of women. Her influence on the teaching
of insight meditation in the West is presented through stories and encounters
told by family members, her students in Calcutta, and several of America's
leading Buddhist and meditation teachers.
