Books on Personal Practice

State of Mind Called Beautiful by Sayadaw U Pandita

Sayadaw U Pandita is one of the foremost teachers of the insight meditation method taught by the late great Burmese Master Mahasi Sayadaw. His first book, In This Very Life, quickly became a classic guide to vipassana. Sixteen years later this book lays out the way and wealth of the Theravadan meditation tradition. U Pandita takes us through an overview of the training, explores two of the ‘guardians of meditation’—the recollection of the qualities of the Buddha and metta or loving-kindness—and details the satipatthana vipasana meditation practice. Presented in a practical and pragmatic way, this book includes headings like ‘metta within the family’, ‘qualities needed during meditation practice’ and ‘how to disentangle yourself through wisdom’. Supporting the practices are a technical discussion on satipatthana, a ‘q & a’ section, and an english-pali and pali-english glossary.

Ri-me Philosophy of Jamgon Kongtrul the Great: a study of the Buddhist lineages of Tibet by Ringu Tulku
The Ri-me movement was a unifying effort to cut through inter-scholastic divisions and disputes that were occurring between the different lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. Jamgön Kongtrül the Great (1813–1899) was a giant in Tibetan history. Led by Kongtrül and several other leading scholars of the time, the Ri-me movement sought an appreciation of the differences and acknowledgment of the importance of variety in benefiting practitioners with different needs. They took great care that the teachings and practices of the different schools and lineages, and their unique styles, did not become confused with one another. This book, comprehensive and accessible, includes an introduction to the history and philosophy of the Ri-me movement; a biography of the movement's leader, Jamgön Kongtrül; helpful summaries of the eight lineages' practice-and-study systems; an explanation of the most hotly disputed concepts; and an overview of the old and new tantras.

Essentials of Mahamudra: looking directly at the mind by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche
What would you see if you looked directly at your mind? The Tibetan Buddhist teachings on mahamudra are known for their ability to lead to profound realization. ‘Essentials of Mahamudra’ is a commentary on Tashi Namgyal's famous Moonlight of Mahamudra—a text that the sixteenth Karmapa had identified as the most valuable for Westerners. Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche recognized that Western meditators don't just need to know how to maintain our meditation practice—we need to know why we should do it. Unmatched in its directness, Essentials of Mahamudra addresses both these needs, rendering this most adaptable to our everyday lives. Peaceful and infinitely adaptable, these teachings are as useful for today's busy world as they have been for centuries.

Giclees—Thanka Prints on Canvas

Dharma Publishing has produced some beautiful reproductions of original thanka paintings using a method called 'giclee'.

"These giclee reproductions replicate antique Tibetan thanka paintings, many originally housed in temples in Tibet and viewed only by lamas and senior monks. These masterfully painted, iconographically accurate works of art are printed using archival, pigment-based inks on waterproof, coated canvas, engineered to give the highest resolution and colour saturation achievable with current digital printing technology. The exquisite colour and detail replicate the original paintings so closely that it is often difficult to see that you are looking at a reproduction and not an original. They are therefore perfect for meditation, inspiration and aesthetic appreciation."

—from Dharma Publishing

The giclees come in three types:

Large unmounted giclees: all around 600 x 450 mm, these are suitable for mounting or framing in either a traditional brocade or more western frame. The full range are available in this size.

They come in durable protective bag and have clear plastic tabs for hanging or can be framed. There is a detailed description of the image on the back.

Adorned mounted giclees: as in the medium mounted giclees but adorned with stunning Swarovski crystals
